Besides, reading the novella prompted me to reread One Hundred Years, and while I still failed to understand that epic saga, it was still a very satisfying read.īeyond my disappointments, the plot of Chronicle was also not engaging for me. That said, I liked the language, which was reminiscent of One Hundred Years, and I still consider García Márquez highly deserving of the Nobel Prize in Literature (awarded in 1982) for his talent with words. At less than 120 pages, I didn’t feel swept up in anything, and I was disappointed that it didn’t have any magical realism, which is part of why I loved the other novel so much. However, the short novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold (published 1981, and read in translation from Spanish by Gregory Rabassa) did nothing for me. It was a rewarding immersion, and I’ve looked forward to my next García Márquez novel. As I struggled for months through the saga (part of which I read in the original Spanish, part in translation by Gregory Rabassa), I found myself absorbed in a magical world as a family’s sweeping story unfolded on a complicated and satisfying stage. When I read One Hundred Years of Solitude (by Gabriel García Márquez, published 1967) half a decade ago, I didn’t understand it, but I loved every bit of it. Although there were so many characters to puzzle me, in the end, the book did captivate me. The narrative is smooth and the central plot intriguing. The book keeps its readers attached to it solely on the grounds of its spellbinding narration. I liked how the author manages to keep the reader hooked to the book till the last page without any evident suspense. It is a fine piece of literature that develops its story slowly, taking its own sweet time. Yet he could not be saved from succumbing to the children’s play of stabbing. They announce their plan of killing Santiago to everyone in the town. She utters, “Santiago Nasar.” Hearing this, her twin brothers set on a fury mission to kill the young man.

No wonder he is a Noble Prize Winner in literature.Ĭhronicle Of A Death Foretold is a gripping story that portrays the shame of the society which believes in the virginity of a woman only if she can produce a crimson stain on the white sheet after her first night. And to get all those heard words right, I picked up this one as my first Garcia’s read. His writing style is one of those that enchant you completely.
